Sioux Falls Leaf Drop Sites Close November 29: Where Gutter Leaves Go Next

Sioux Falls closes its two free leaf and branch drop sites at 5 p.m. on Sunday, November 29, 2026. Until then they take leaves from your gutters and yard every day of the week, and after that the leaves go to the Regional Landfill instead.

Where are the Sioux Falls leaf drop sites?

The city runs two sites this fall. One is on North Lyon Boulevard near the Sioux Empire Fairgrounds, reached from West 12th Street or West Madison Street. The other is at 1015 E. Chambers Street, just west of the Household Hazardous Waste Facility, reached from North Cliff Avenue.

Both are open Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. They are free for anyone living in Sioux Falls or in Lake, Lincoln, McCook, Minnehaha or Turner County. The city’s drop site announcement has the full details.

What can you bring?

Leaves and branches, in separate piles. Signs at each site show where each one goes. Empty any plastic bags before you unload, because the sites take paper bags but not plastic. Stumps, rubble and household garbage are turned away, and every load has to be tarped or carried in an enclosed vehicle.

The sites are for homeowners. Lawn care companies and other businesses take their loads to the landfill.

Where do leaves go after November 29?

The Sioux Falls Regional Landfill takes yard waste Monday to Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed on Sundays and on Thanksgiving, November 26. Each household gets one free landfill pass a year with a driver’s license or state ID, and the pass resets on January 1. Rates and accepted materials are on the city’s landfill page.

What about the towns around Sioux Falls?

Hartford’s yard waste site on Railroad Street, south of the high school, closes for the year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, November 28. Canton’s rubble site at 403 S. Hiawatha Drive takes grass and leaves all winter, but from November it opens on Saturdays only, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Harrisburg’s compost site at 801 S. Prairie Street runs through November, so check its hours with the city before you load up. The service area page lists what each town publishes.

When should you clean the gutters this fall?

After the last leaves come off the trees near your house and before the gutters freeze. If you can wait for the last leaves and still beat November 29, you get a clean gutter and a free place to dump the debris in the same weekend.

Wet leaves packed into a gutter freeze into a solid plug, and a plugged gutter in March sends meltwater over the edge and down the foundation. Run a hose down each downspout once the gutter is clear. The gutter cleaning guide covers what a cleaning costs and how to do it safely.
